Merlin (FGO)

Merlin’s portrayal remains largely faithful to his mythological counterpart, including his half-Incubus origins, vast magical abilities, and trickster-like personality. He still possesses
immense foresight and prefers to guide events subtly rather than directly interfering. However, while the mythological Merlin is typically sealed away by Morgan le Fay, Fate’s
version is trapped by the Lady of the Lake instead. Rather than roaming freely, he is confined to the Tower of Avalon, where he can only observe history without physically taking
part. Despite this, he is recognized as one of the most powerful magi in existence, holding the title of Grand Caster, a designation given to those capable of standing against threats to humanity itself. Even while imprisoned, he uses his powers to assist heroes like Artoria Pendragon, guiding them through illusions, dreams, and prophecy rather than direct action. While both versions of Merlin share the fate of being trapped, Fate’s interpretation casts him as a self-aware prisoner, resigned to watching over humanity while still maintaining influence as one of the most powerful magic users in history.
