Sakamoto Ryoma (FGO)

Sakamoto Ryōma’s portrayal remains highly accurate to his historical counterpart, retaining his free-spirited, diplomatic nature and deep belief in modernization and unity. His role in forming the Satsuma-Chōshū Alliance, promoting democracy, and advocating for Western-style reforms is faithfully preserved. Even his assassination at Omiya remains a key part of his story. However, the major divergence comes in the form of his wife, Oryō, who is depicted as a dragon-like sea serpent (Ryūdōji no Oryō) rather than a historical figure. This fantastical element is based on Japanese folklore, which loosely connects Oryō to a water spirit or dragon deity from the Ryūdōji Temple in Tosa. While the historical Oryō was simply his wife, Fate reimagines her as a mythical guardian, symbolizing Ryōma’s legendary status and adding a supernatural dimension to his legacy. Despite this, Fate’s version of Ryōma himself stays true to his real-life ideals and achievements, making him one of the more historically accurate Servants in the series, aside from the mythical twist surrounding Oryō.
